Introduction:
Srikakulam was previously called as "CHICACOLE" , located in the extreme northeastern district of Andhra Pradesh with total area of 5837 sq kms . Srikakulam was carved out in 1950 from Vishakaptnam district and contains total 38 mandal. Srikakulam is blessed with 3 major rivers namely “NAGAVALI”, “VAMSADHARA”, “BAHUDA”.
Geographical Profile:
It is situated within the geographic
co-ordinates of 18°-20’ and 19°-10’ N and 83°-50’ and 84°-50’ E.The district is skirted to a distance by
Kandivalasagedda, Vamsadhara and Bahuda at certain stretches of their courses
while a line of heights of the great Eastern Ghats run from the northeast. Vizianagaram flanks in the south and west
while Odisha bounds it on the north and the Bay of Bengal on the East.Revenue divisions and Mandals
: There are three divisions namely Srikakulam, Palakonda and Tekkali and
38 mandals in the district.
Culture:
1. The district is renowned for the brassware products namely, Budithi Bell and Brass Craft, which are made at Budithi village of the district. These are registered as one of the geographic indication from Andhra Pradesh.2.Fishing has been the main sources of income to the individuals of the Coastal region.
3.Cashew processing factories are operated at Palasa and the district is a popular Worldwide for its fine Khadi Cloth Woven by weavers of Ponduru.
4.Modern Jute Handicrafts are made by DWCRA groups in nearly all the villages. The luminaries of Srikakulam added to the World in all main actions of creative spheres Art, Culture and Literature.
5.Srikakulam has huge industrial belt covering whole srikakulam dist. Majorly industries located at pydi bheemavaram which is likely to be made as industrial hub.
Agriculture:
The major occupation of people of this land is agriculture, owing to the plenty of fertile black soil available and the major field crops grown are Paddy ,Groundnut ,Mesta ,Sugarcane , Green Gram,Black Gram and Horse Gram.Mangoes,Onion and Chilli are the are the major horticulture crops.
Among plantations Coconut and Cashew are widely spread.Srikakulam has the reputation for growing the best varieties of vegetables.As of 2015, vegetables are grown in 21,000 acres of land in the district.Farmers in the district currently export vegetables to faraway markets like Hyderabad, Kolkata and Bhubaneswar
